ABOUT DATS

DATS Environmental Services has been operating in the waste management industry for more than 14 years. DATS provides professional, environmentally responsible, efficient and friendly skip bin hire and waste management services for house holders, and construction industry, commercial and institutional clients. DATS services are available on both a casual and ongoing contract basis.

HOW DATS WAS FORMED

The now thriving DATS Environmental Services waste management company started from a chance conversation in 1991 between its principals, Scott Crosweller then an investment banker, and Kent Grundy, an engineer. They met when they were both volunteers in the Rural Fire Service. Their conversation resulted in the start-up of a small part-time skip bin business that was called ‘Dial a Tipper Service’. This name has now been condensed to DATS..

In the early days Scott and Kent had one truck and eight 2m3 size skip bins and they operated from the driveway of Kent’s parent’s home in Frenchs Forest. They focused on servicing the waste disposal needs of small builders and the building tradesmen in that area.

Now DATS is a leader in the casual hire / skip bin waste removal business with 25 to 30% of the market. DATS has 35 trucks, 2,000 bins of different sizes, and four operational depots strategically located to cover the whole of metropolitan Sydney. DATS provides a diverse range of waste management services.

DATS continues to be a 100% Australian family-owned business making it unique in the waste management industry.

WHAT MAKES DATS DIFFERENT

DATS attribute its success to always being on the lookout for ways to improve customer service and reduce operating costs.

DATS was one of the first waste management companies to introduce computer-based technology for scheduling deliveries and collections, and to use real-time GPS monitoring of actual truck locations. Real-time monitoring ensures job control and gives DATS operators the flexibility to divert trucks to meet unexpected client needs on a timely basis without disrupting scheduled deliveries or collections.

DATS has been quick to respond to legislative changes affecting the waste management industry, particularly the incentives and increasing demand for recycling. DATS provides waste management planning services to help developers achieve a high NABERS Green Star rating for their buildings. DATS has joined the Green Building Council of Australia to become more involved in leading the way in recovering useful resources from wastes, and reducing energy consumption and the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Currently more than 85% of the waste collected by DATS is recycled to produce useful materials with commercial value. DATS strongly encourages its clients to sort wastes into recycling categories at source on their site to reduce the overall costs of waste management. On-site sorting eliminates the costs of sorting and of transporting wastes to a sorting facility. It also reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill – which is costly.
